Panama declares state of emergency after powerful earthquakes and aftershocks

Panama’s government declared a state of emergency on Saturday after two strong earthquakes struck on Friday, followed by hours of aftershocks.

The magnitude-7.7 and magnitude-6.6 quakes toppled buildings and prompted evacuations. Officials reported damage across all 10 provinces and two Indigenous territories but attributed no deaths to the earthquakes.

More than 100 aftershocks were recorded, with the strongest reaching magnitude 5.8.
