Abdiqadir Salah, a Somali boy seriously injured in a US drone strike, underwent surgery in Mogadishu with funding from Guardian readers, the newspaper reported.
Salah was seven when the strike hit the village of Jamaame almost a year earlier. His two siblings were also seriously injured. A Guardian investigation found that at least 12 civilians, including eight children, were killed.
His mother, Marian Haji Abdi Guled, felt both happiness and anxiety as they travelled to the hospital by rickshaw for the long-awaited operation.
