Flávio Bolsonaro leads Lula in Brazil election, with runoff set for 25 October

Flávio Bolsonaro finished ahead of incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the first round of Brazil’s presidential election, putting the rightwing challenger in a strong position before the 25 October runoff.

Bolsonaro, 45, received 56.1 million votes, or 47.03%, compared with 53.8 million votes and 45.16% for Lula, 80. The far-right candidate’s unexpected lead dealt a setback to progressive voters and supporters of the leftwing president.

Lula faces a historical hurdle: since democracy returned to Brazil in 1985, no candidate who placed second in the opening round has gone on to win the runoff.
