Parti Québécois wins Quebec election but falls short of majority
The Parti Québécois returned to power in Quebec, but its minority position casts doubt on plans for a referendum on separation from Canada.

The Parti Québécois won Monday’s election in Quebec, returning to power after 14 years while falling five seats short of a majority. The result leaves uncertainty over its central goal of separating the French-speaking province from Canada.
The party gained 56 seats and more than doubled its share of the vote compared with the 2022 election. Despite those gains, its minority position presents a major obstacle to its promised referendum after Donald Trump leaves office in 2028.
The prospect of a separation vote also comes against the backdrop of a bruising trade war with Trump. The victory therefore does not necessarily put Canadian unity under the immediate threat the result might suggest.
