Latin American criminal networks are expanding their European presence and building close relationships with local mafia organisations, according to a four-month Guardian investigation that links the trend to rising cocaine trafficking.
The investigation found that cartels and factions from Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Venezuela, Mexico and the US are active in at least 12 European countries. Its findings drew on databases, police and intelligence agencies, and interviews with judges, prosecutors and experts from eight countries.
The quantity of cocaine seized in Europe increased by 471% between 2014 and 2024. More local laboratories processing cocaine derivatives were also dismantled.
