Isaias becomes 2026’s first Atlantic hurricane, heads toward US Gulf coast

Isaias has strengthened into the first Atlantic hurricane of 2026, with winds of 80 mph and a minimum pressure of 975 millibars. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasts it will reach Category 2 strength as it approaches the northern US Gulf coast on Friday.

The storm is expected to make landfall along that coast, posing a risk of flash flooding and isolated river flooding.

A strong El Niño has contributed to an unusually quiet Atlantic hurricane season. No season’s first hurricane has formed this late since October 8, 1905. That comparison predates satellite tracking, which began in the 1960s and made it easier to detect hurricanes that never reach land.
