Canada plans to extend assisted dying exclusion for mental illness alone
Canada plans legislation to maintain an assisted dying exclusion for people whose only medical condition is mental illness.

Canada’s federal government said Wednesday it would move forward with legislation to keep people whose only medical condition is mental illness ineligible for medically assisted death.
The existing exclusion under the medical assistance in dying (Maid) program was scheduled to end in March. Lawmakers are divided over whether eligibility should be broadened to include this group.
The ruling Liberal party’s proposed legislation seeks to address the dispute over access to physician-assisted death.
