Cairo mural of dark-skinned Tutankhamun and Nefertiti painted over amid row

Cairo authorities painted over a mural showing Tutankhamun and Nefertiti with dark skin amid allegations that the artwork revived Afrocentric claims about the pharaohs’ origins, according to the Guardian.

The 66-metre-long painting in Tahrir Square was created by the volunteer youth group Rasmet Basma. It was one of 40 murals commissioned to spruce up the city ahead of Chinese president Xi Jinping’s state visit.

Authorities were removing the artwork from Xi’s expected view on the eve of his arrival last month, the report said.
