Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva led a large rally through Rio de Janeiro ahead of Sunday’s election, arguing that he alone could prevent the far right from regaining power.
Speaking the day before the demonstration, the 80-year-old leftwing leader said he had chosen to seek a historic fourth term because he believed only he could block the family of his rightwing rival, Flávio Bolsonaro, from returning to government.
Lula described the forces he was seeking to keep out of power as “fascists,” framing his candidacy as a barrier to their return.
