Brazil’s close election tests momentum of pro-Trump Latin American right

Brazil’s closely contested election on Sunday pits leftist incumbent Lula against the son of a former far-right president convicted of staging a coup. The vote will test the momentum of a growing bloc of Latin American leaders aligned with Donald Trump.

After addressing the United Nations general assembly in September, Trump met a dozen like-minded Latin American leaders in New York. He claimed rightwing candidates had won all seven presidential elections held in the region since his second term began, and that every candidate he had endorsed had prevailed.

Most of those attending belonged to the Shield of the Americas, a coalition aimed at combating drug cartels that comprises 15 countries led by rightwing or far-right governments.
