Brazil’s presidential election is heading to a second round, with far-right challenger Flávio Bolsonaro ahead of incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva but short of the majority required to win outright.
With more than 98% of votes counted, Bolsonaro had received 47.3%, compared with 44.8% for Lula, the leftwing president. The two will face each other in a runoff on 25 October.
Bolsonaro, 45, is the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. Lula is 80.
