Argentina vows to stop Falklands offshore oil development amid sovereignty push

Argentina’s foreign minister, Pablo Quirno, said his government would prevent the Falkland Islands from developing offshore oilfields as part of its effort to peacefully assert sovereignty over the islands.

Speaking at a thinktank event in Argentina’s capital, Quirno criticised Britain for not entering negotiations over the islands and for supporting a major offshore oil project in their waters. The British ambassador was among those attending.

Quirno presented the proposed action against oil development as part of the government’s broader sovereignty strategy, according to The Guardian.
