A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Panama’s southern coast, prompting tsunami warnings along the western coastline of Central and South America, according to the US Geological Survey.
The USGS located the epicenter near Panama’s southern tip, roughly 14km (9 miles) southwest of the remote community of Pitaloza Arriba.
Potentially hazardous waves could affect Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador and Mexico.
